By: Tansu Pişkin – Hikmet Adal The Constitutional Court has ruled that the penalization of Academics for Peace on charge of “propagandizing for a terrorist organization” has violated their freedom of expression.

Attorney Baybuğa has said, “Right now, I can say that the execution [of the sentence] has been suspended. We are very happy,” on the release of Üstel, an academic for peace.

The court has ruled for the release of Assoc. Prof. Altınel without judicial control measures. He is charged with “membership of a terrorist organization” because of interpreting speeches in a conference.

Associate Professor Dr. Tuna Altınel, who is one of the academics to be prosecuted for signing the “We will not be party to this crime” declaration and has been detained, says with refence to the declaration, “I’m proud to be part of it.”

Prof. Dr. Füsun Üstel, a signatory of the Peace Declaration, has been released from the Eskişehir Women’s Closed Prison where she had been behind bars since she turned herself in on May 8 to serve the prison term approved by the İstanbul Regional Court of Justice 3rd Penal Chamber.

Tezcan was one of over 2,000 academics who signed a petition titled “We will not be party to this crime” in January 2016. The petition criticised the Turkish military’s heavy-handed approach in Turkey’s predominantly Kurdish south east since the resumption of conflict with Kurdish insurgent groups in 2015.

Turkish authorities on Wednesday detained Baki Tezcan, an associate professor of history at the University of California, upon his arrival in Istanbul due to an arrest warrant issued for signing a peace petition.

Criminal prosecutions continue in Turkey against signatories of the Academics for Peace petition. Rights groups call the prosecutions a violation of their freedom of expression.
